Only 15 minutes drive from the Chateau is the historic town of Saumur famous for it's fairy tale Chateau, Cadre Noire and The National Riding Academy. The town is built primarily of the local tuffeau stone which gleams bright white in the strong summer sun.
The region is between 80 and 150 kms inland ensuring warm dry weather in the summer. The Chateau of Saumur boasts panoramic views along the Loire valley. The town is an interesting mixture of modern shops, paved walkways, markets and an old town where the streets are surprisingly steep upto the Chateau that sits above the town.
It is renown for its sparkling white wines and is the largest producer of mushrooms in France, which are grown in the limestone caves which surround the town. It is also the home of the elite French Cavalry Regiment the Cadre Noire and the L'ecole Nationale the national school of equitation.
The region has become one of the most popular in France. The area also has some superb restaurants all within easy driving distance.
